Celebrities lend help to GABRIELA members victims of typhoon Ondoy

Angel Locsin was in Veterans, Bgy. Bagong Silangan handing out
groceries to families. Judy Ann Santos’ Mommy Carol gave out blankets
and mats and fed residents of Bgy. Tatalon with arroz caldo she cooked
herself. Katrina Halili donated boxes of canned sardines and bags full
of underwear and distributed the goods herself in Bgy. Loyola. Indeed,
celebrities were quick to give their support to families of GABRIELA
members within Metro Manila who were victims of typhoon Ondoy.

“The lives of thousands of our members in Metro Manila were devastated
with typhoon Ondoy. We are very grateful that support for the
immediate relief came immediately from our friends, allies and network
including celebrities,” said Joms Salvador, GABRIELA spokesperson.

According to Salvador, among those hardest hit were GABRIELA members
in Bgy. Bagong Silangan, Bgy. Tatalon, Bgy. Batasan Hills and
Commonwealth in Quezon City, Bgy. Olandes in Marikina and Bgy. Cupang,
Bgy. Alabang and Bgy. Sikatville in Muntinlupa. Also destroyed by
typhoon Ondoy was their daycare center in Batasan Hills while the one
in Bgy. Bagong Silangan served as an evacuation center.

“While typhoon Ondoy devastated lives and livelihood, it also brought
out the strength of women’s collective action. Leaders and members of
local chapters of GABRIELA organized and lead the distribution of
relief operations in their communities.

GABRIELA Pasig worked hand-in-hand with the local barangay to rescue
residents at the height of Ondoy’s onslaught and later manned and
managed the evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, GABRIELA members in Bgy. Tatalon criticized President
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who went to visit their evacuation center in
Diosdado Macapagal High School. Members claimed Arroyo came with
members of the media for photo op gimmicks. Later, ten families from
their community were taken to Malacañang and were promised livelihood.

“Empty promises from a lying, cheating and corrupt president mean
nothing to families devastated by Ondoy. Showcasing these families in
Malacañang is even more reprehensible. It cannot erase the fact that
the Arroyo government, once again, showed its inutility,
ill-preparedness and neglect of the people,h said Salvador.

“At this point, we are already looking beyond relief operations
towards a real rehabilitation of the devastated communities. Thus, we
call on concerned individuals, groups and institutions for any help
they can extend our members and other families,” said Salvador.

GABRIELA accepts donations at Gabriela Women’s Party Headquarters
(#118-A Scout Rallos Extension, Bgy. Sacred Heart, Kamuning Quezon
City with telephone number 929-5342) and welcomes volunteers for their
relief and rehabilitation operations. ###
