Name: Joanne Alcantara

What she has done as a GABRIELA member: Before moving to Alaska, I served as chair for Pinay sa Seattle and was also part of GABRIELA’s national executive committee. Since moving to Juneau, my wife and I committed to making a monthly financial contribution to GABRIELA to sustain its work, because we believe in the self-determination of our communities.

Expo Trip Dates: 2005 / 2006 / 2007 (Possibly more!)

Things she’d good at: I’m good at finding adventures in life and recognizing and appreciating different parts of the movement.

Why this work is meaningful to Joanne: This work is meaningful to me, because of the positive way that it impacts families, communities, the environment, artistic creation, and women’s sense of themselves. I love seeing how being part of GABRIELA strengthens Filipinas and creates stronger communities.

When she’s not working for the movement, where can we find Joanne / what can we find Joanne doing? Now that I’m living in Juneau, I’m focusing on strengthening my family and building skills to contribute to our work in the future. During the day, you can catch me writing grants for Perseverance Theatre. On the weekends, you might find me with my wife: having toddler time in the forest, watching movies with our teenagers, or experimenting in the kitchen. Our life is full and even though we are far, it is richer because of our ongoing connection to the movement and the lessons we’ve learned from it.
