Name: Elaine Agoot

What Elaine has done as a GABRIELA member:

  • Mini expo at Gabriela office in Quezon City in December 2012. Met comfort lolas (grandmas) who are still fighting, as they are dying (of old age), to have the Japanese and Philippine government acknowledge the atrocities they experienced.
  • Also attended the One Billion Rising Campaign launch in the Philippines and got to meet Vagina Monologues creator Eve Ensler.
  • Attended the International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees 4 (IAMR4) in New York. Marched from Times Square to United Nations Headquarters.

Expo Trip Dates: Hopefully in 2015!!!

Why this work is meaningful to Elaine: This work is meaningful to me because the womyn and kasamas I have met have been so supportive in my struggles as a young, queer womyn in the movement. I used to wonder if anyone thought about why Filipinos leave the Philippines at an alarming rate of 3,000 people a day, mostly women– and if anyone actually wanted to do something about it! I found that within Gabriela, and it feels like home.

When she’s not working for the movement, where can we find Elaine / what can we find Elaine doing?:
Working in the affordable housing movement. Galivanting, eating, laughing, loving, sleeping, retreating into the nature.
