Pinay Sa Seattle Celebrates Four Years In Honor of Centuries of Resistance
Seattle, WA—On October 28, 2010, Pinay Sa Seattle will present “Diwata: Spirit of Creation, Spirit of Revolution” at Seattle’s historic venue, Washington Hall (153 14th Avenue). Diwata will be an original production featuring locally and nationally acclaimed Pin@y, Filipina-American and other artists and community members of indigenous descent, re-presenting stories from indigenous experiences of creation and revolution through the mediums of dance, spoken word, hip-hop, theatre, film and more.
“In this time of intensifying political repression, in the midst of FBI raids, police brutality and violence against queer and trans people, it is even more crucial for our community to celebrate and honor our legacy of militant struggle and resistance,” commented Katrina Pestano, Organizing Director of Pinay Sa Seattle (Pinay means a woman of Philippine origin). Diwata will create a sacred space where self-determination and realization will answer the call of ancestral origins to remember the ways of nurturing communal respect and growth in the face of continuing oppression. By presenting our own creation stories, automythbiographies, and works of self-liberation, Diwata links tradition with evolution and reminds us of the lessons still present in ancestral remembrance. “Pinay Sa Seattle’s resistance once again takes shape in a cultural production and takes flight in the spirit of creation and revolution,” added Pestano.
Diwata will feature inspiring and rarely-performed works by artists from a rainbow of identities across intersections of color, gender, sexual orientations, class, abilities and life experiences that all come together to explore our origins. Through interactive pieces that explore space, sound and performance, Diwata will weave the traditions of a Dia de los Muertos celebration with an exploration of struggles which produced the warriors and healers of our communities today.
We welcome you to take part in creating our collective creation story and bear witness for each other in this ceremony of remembrance and revolution as we celebrate a new cycle of growth. *Please bring an offering for our altar (to commemorate loved ones or anything you wish to release).
Tickets ($10 pre-sale/$15 at the door) can be purchased through any Pin@y member. Dinner is included and will be served at 6:30 pm. Show will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org with inquiries, to volunteer, or if you would like childcare.
