Name: Carmie Estandian

Member Since: Fall 2009

What Carmie has done as a GABRIELA member:

  • Educational Officer 2013 – Present
  • Special Events / Diwang Pinay Committee
  • Logistics extraordinaire
  • Fluent in Tagalog and Ilokano

Reason for Joining: I started organizing with AnakBayan Seattle as a youth organizer. When I graduated from college and became a mother, I joined Gabriela Seattle, as a new mother and it was only fitting for me to continue organizing in the women’s sector. I joined Gabriela Seattle because as a Filipina immigrant, it helped me understand reasons why my mother left her family back home in the Philippines to come to the US for work. Understanding the conditions in the Philippines gave me a sense of “forgiveness” for my mother for leaving me and my siblings at a very young age.

Expo Trip Dates: Future Exposurist

Things she’s good at: I love cooking, DIY projects, working with numbers, dancing, organizing stuff and debating with people.

Why this work is meaningful to Carmie: Women throughout the world are living in some of the most severe, dangerous and unfair circumstances – low/unpaid jobs, domestic violence, exploitation by both the state and capitalism; yet women continue to work to provide for their family. I want fundamental changes in society to improve the lives of Filipinas all over the world by breaking down imperialism, capitalism and patriarchy. Being in Gabriela Seattle has also been an opportunity for me to grow both personally and politically, in developing leadership skills, organizing skills and developing ideas. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to grow in many ways, more than I ever could. Joining the movement is a commitment, I am committed for working towards liberation for Filipinas all over the world.

When she’s not working for the movement, where can we find Carmie / what can we find Carmie doing? You can find me at home because I’m a homebody. When I’m not at home, you can find me at soccer fields, football fields or at Jefferson Golf Course watching my son play soccer, football and/or golf. On my “ME” time, you can find me at most local restaurants that serves chicken and beer.
