Maalaala Mo Kaya? Isulong!
Celebrating 10 Years of Filipino Women’s Struggle & Victories
SEATTLE – On October 28, 2016 Filipina women’s organization, GABRIELA Seattle, will host their Anniversary event at the Beacon United Methodist Church, marking 10 years of educating, advocating, and defending the rights of Filipinas globally. The celebration includes a musical production honoring overseas Filipino workers and migrants, a community dinner, and silent auction.
Last week, GABRIELA Seattle joined GABRIELA USA’s national campaign to gather 13,000+ petition signatures and garner public pressure on NBC Universal to halt development of “Mail Order Family (see #CancelMailOrderFamily #FilipinasNot4Sale tinyurl.com/FilipinasNot4Sale
According to GABRIELA USA, “We will continue to push for our demand a meeting with NBC executives and producers of “Mail Order Family” to educate them of the true plight of Filipino women and the economic conditions of the Philippines which forces them into the mail order bride industry and other exploitative industries.”
On the contrary, GABRIELA Seattle’s one-night musical production, “Maalaala Mo Kaya? Isulong!” (“Would you remember? Onward!”) gets the story right. Inspired by the longest running drama anthology in Philippine Television, Maalaala Mo Kaya, the play follows OFW Maritess as she leaves behind her family in the Philippines to seek livelihood in the United States. The play written by GABRIELA Seattle members shows the harsh reality of forced migration and worker exploitation experienced by the 6,000 Filipinos leaving the Philippines everyday.
All are welcome to join the celebration and share their stories. For ticket information, please check our Facebook page or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
